St James Historic Church
A truly historic church, lissted in the Doomsday book, right on your doorstep. Loved by locals and visitors from all over the world.
The Church of St. James the Apostle in Somerton is an ancient, Grade 1 listed church that is open daily to visitors and is the centre for the village’s spiritual life and a focus for a variety of social activities. The Church is part of the Cherwell Valley Benefice and is served by a clergy team of 4 led by Revd Helen Barnes. There are a variety of services from traditional prayer book services to informal children’s services. The church is also a beautiful setting for weddings, funerals and baptisms.
St. James’ parish is part of the Cherwell Valley Benefice along with five other parishes; Ardley, Fritwell, Lower Heyford, Souldern and Upper Heyford.
Opening times
St James Somerton is now open daily for private prayer and contemplation every daily from approximately 8:00 am – 4: 00 pm.

Ride & Stride
St James fully paticipates in the Oxfordshire annual Ride & Stride event held on the second Saturday of September.
The event involves people cycling, walking and even horse riding. Volunteers are offered donations for each chuch or chapel they visit on the day.
It’s great fun and a wonderful way to see some of our amazinng historical achitecture in Oxfordshire whilst helping to support our heritage.
Each year voluntees also help in the our church be signing in those who visiit St James.
